Pronounced 'Banna-Borka' in Irish. These Mountains, named after a Shepheard 'Boirche' around the 3rd Century herded his cattle along the peaks of these Mountains. The Mac Mahon Clan moved in around the 12th Century, one of their leaders 'Mughdhorna' (pronounced Mourna) came to settle in County Down. This clan gave their name to the area we now call 'The Mournes'.
This Mountain Range has so much variety to offer from big days out on the "700's" or more relaxed days in the Western Mournes. The sky is the limit - well, Slieve Donard is the Limit at 850 metres above sea level!
An abundance of wildlife can be spotted in The Mournes for example the Peregrine Falcon & Buzzard to name a few.
